Replace On-site Artificial Commanding? “A Thinking Signal Controller” Can Increase 30% Passage Efficiency of Traffic

Reported by Chongqing Daily, many urban signal control systems in China are in the way of periodic operation for a long time. In this way, the unbalanced situation of no vehicle while green time in one direction but  overlong queue in the other direction is always existing. A thinking signal controller was launched on 2019 Smart China Expo on Aug.27,which would solve the traffic pain point. As reported, the signal controller can increase 30% passage efficiency through making road traffic lights coordinate with AIT( artificial intelligence technology). At present, it has been applied in practice at 10 intersections of 5 main districts.

As the core equipment of urban traffic signal control system and one of the core equipments of city traffic management, the signal controller should service traffic management work safely, orderly and swimmingly. The relevant person in charge of Chongqing Ulit Science & Technology Co., Ltd introduces that the reasons of causing low traffic efficiency include not only the lack of sensing equipment but also the low intelligence level of signal controllers. Based on this, Chongqing Ulit has researched and developed GJK-10 road traffic signal controller which possesses the capabilities of complete information perception access and logical operation reasoning and the functions of full IoT( Internet of Things) and intelligent operation and maintenance. It can be called a thinking signal controller.    

       

How can a signal controller think? As introduced, in the terms of data perception GJK-10 can describe and process traffic flow, occupancy and queuing length including all kinds of event data like unblock situation, slow moving incident and congestion without missing key control information in the way of a virtual detector. In the case of security authorization, the controller can realize accurate system control of green light time by seconds through controlling the virtual detector by remote network.     

       

In the terms of optimal control, the controller can simulate on-site artificial commanding logic or optimal control logic after the fact and orderly release traffic flow of every direction. At present, the controller has upgraded to self-optimizing control technology based on flow direction and window control. These two technologies support each other to realize accurate control of traffic signals replacing on-site artificial commanding.    

           

In the terms of full IoT( Internet of Things) and intelligent operation and maintenance, by technology cooperating with Huawei the controller can transmit data directly on the power lines of all kinds of outer equipments. This realizes full connection between the controller with lamps, countdown timers, pedestrian crossing buttons, VMS and all kinds of traffic detectors. While intersection transformation, cost of ditching, pipe laying and communication line deploying can be saved.          

For example, when detecting a string of LEDs in a lamp panel or a group of LEDs in a countdown timer are damaged the controller will automatically report the damage situation to the signal control background system at first time. According to the damage degree, the system will push the visual information to related personnel including the APP of the maintenance personnel, replacing traditional huge-crowd strategy and passive waiting maintenance method. Besides, the controller can also connect with vehicle equipments at intersections and push the information to the vehicles.   

          

At present, cooperating with China Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co., Ltd and Chongqing Vehicle Testing Institute, we have constructed more than 30 signal control intersections of vehicle networking in Chongqing, assisting research and industrialization of driverless vehicles. the person in charge introduces. This kind of controllers have been in applying in practice in Chongqing, Henan, Yunnan and Gansu province, and then will be exported to Singapore and Laos.
